Amendments to the family planning law came into force in March 2023.
With the modifications of Law 14,443/2022, capable men and women over 21 years of age or with at least two living children are now allowed to undergo voluntary sterilization.
Among the highlights of the new wording is the possibility of carrying out the procedure during childbirth, as well as the waiver of spousal consent, which was previously required.
For the procedure to be performed, the interested party must express their wish 60 days in advance of the surgical procedure.
